This is a general introduction. As we continue to examine this topic we'll look at several of the supposed human anscestors and find out how much we actually know about them.
On day six of creation God made all of the land animals, including apes.
"Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind'; and it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good." - Genesis 1:24-25
God created apes on day six as one of the "kinds" of animals He created. Then in verse 26 we read the account of the creation of humanity, separate from apes.
"Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." - Genesis 1:26-27
Do Christians believe this because the Bible says so? Yes. God created all of reality. However, that also means that an honest interpretation of what science reveals should be consistent with what God said He did. And this consistency must be observed with honesty. No ignoring evidence. No interpretations that are not supported by the evidence. Christianity is based on truth. If Christianity is based on a lie, it is a false religion. But also, if what God describes in Genesis is not true (based on a plain reading), then Jesus is a liar and Christianity is a false religion. Either way, a lie proves Christianity to be a false religion. So we must be seeking truth.
The Smithsonian human origins web site has an impressive display of "human ancestors." However, what you are looking at is art. Artist renditions showing what these "human anscestor" might have looked, based on the assumnption that evolution is true. That means that what you are seeeing on this page provides NO PROOF concerning human evolution. All it shows is that the Smithonian has some art created by some very good artists.
As you'll see as we get into the details, the depth of evidence is no where near what the Smithsonian is trying to imply. Actually, once we look at it, the evidence evaporates and is gone. Please watch this video and read the articles linked below.

Before you get the good news, you need to know the bad news. It's about you. God says:
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. - Romans 3:23
Sin means disobeying God, aka breaking God's law. God is perfect and perfection is required to enter heaven. It's a standard none of us can achieve. We all fall short. For example, compare yourself with just one of the Ten Commandments. Have you ever told a lie?
All liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. - Revelation 21:8. Or what about:
Have you ever taken something that does not belong to you, no matter how small? Have you ever looked at another person with lust? In Matthew 5 Jesus said:
Everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.' Have you done that?
You have broken God's laws. You have sinned. There must be justice, and that means eternity in hell, the lake of fire, the second death. Unless...
Unless there was someone willing to pay that penalty on your behalf. Someone who will take on themselves the consequences you deserve. And there is. There is one person who can and will do that. That person is Jesus Christ. If you trust this is true (believe), and repent (turn away from disobeying God), Jesus' death is applied to your account and you are freed from the penalty of sin to be with God forever.
