Can An Atheist Prove There Is No God?

Suggested reading: I Am An Atheist: Why should I consider becoming a Christian? (audio also available)

Atheists often state that it is impossible to prove a negative. That's not strictly true. For example, I can prove the statement "There is no one in the room." true by looking in the room and seeing it is empty. Another negative statement, "The Science Pastor is not in China." can be proven by simply seeing that I am in Massachusetts. I have proven the negative by knowing the characteristics of a human (I can only be in one place at a time), and then devising a test based on those characteristics/

What About God?

One way to look at the question of God is the fact that, proving there is no God requires knowledge of everything everywhere. An atheist may say, "I don't see any evidence of God doing anything." But, is God required to be doing "something," locally in a way we can observe, at all times? No. As I say in the video, God may be doing something in the Andromeda galaxy right now, that if we were there we could observe. But, we're not there. Since one of the characteristics of God is omnipresence, to claim you know that God doesn't exist requires that you look everywhere in the universe. That means you need to know everything about every place in the the universe. Based on this, the best on the atheist claim is to say: "I've not personally seen any evidence that there is a God." This is a statement about their experience. Yet, it is not complete, and so is not true.

The truth is, all they can say is that, "I've personally not seen any evidence that I WILL ACCEPT, showing me there is a God."

Is there a way to know whether or not God exists? Yes! God has made it clear that He has provided all the evidence that is needed. No one has an excuse for not knowing God is real.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools. - Romans 1:18-22

It's sort of funny. In talking with atheists they reject God, and then give reasons for rejecting a god that does not exist. I cannot recall speaking with an atheist who could accurately describe God. In every case they had rejected a God of their imagination. I suppose that is logical... invent something that is imaginary and then reject it as being imaginary. For example, it is common for atheists to say they reject the "cruel and inhumane God of the Old Testament." But, as I show in my book "Did God Really Say?" (free copy online), what the atheist describes as cruelty is never an act committed by God,. It is God removing His restraint on sin resulting in humanity engaging in wretched cruelty. People are cruel, not God. Atheists have rejected a god that deserves to be rejected because it is a god that does not exist. But, they've said nothing about the creator God of the Bible.

Here is an important fact: God is not hiding. As we read in Romans one above, He has so plainly made Himself known that no one has an excuse for not knowing God.

The principle is a simple one, if you see a painting, you know there has to be a painter. If you see a creation (if you see specified, intricate, complexity), you know there must be a creator. Many evolutionists admit this. Even the ardent evolutionists Richard Dawkins admits: "Biology is the study of complicated things that give the APPEARANCE of having been designed for a purpose.” He sees design, but as Romans (above) says, he suppresses that knowledge. So the question about the existence of God is more than a simple, "Is there evidence showing God exists?" The true question is, "Is there evidence YOU WILL ACCEPT as proving God exists?"

Excuses

Atheist have a number of excuses for rejecting God, who has plainly made His existence known. Another excuse is claiming that we can't trust the Bible. The Bible is just a myth story. All that shows is that the atheist is not familiar with the Bible. I've spoken with atheists who seem to have the Bible memorized, and can freely quote just about any section. But, it quickly becomes evident they don't understand it. They don't know what it is actually saying.

Another excuse is to claim living beings are poorly designed. People get sick, our eyes are poorly designed, and everyone dies. The claim is that we are still an evolutionary work in progress, and evolution will weed out these "defects." However, if we were designed by a perfect God, we would not have all of these "defects." Again it is the atheists lack of knowledge that is showing. But, it's more than a simple lack of knowledge, most don't want to acquire the knowledge... they reject it without even examining the evidence and understanding who God is and who we are. I hope that, if you are an atheist or agnostic reading this, you will honestly seek out knowledge of God. Of course, the best place to learn about God is in the Bible. I suggest starting with the Book of John. In that book John proves that Jesus is God, which also proves God is real. A good place to go for short answers to questions about the Bible is Got Questions.

Why Do People Reject God?

Why do people deny God exists? Why is it that people don't want the real God of the Bible to exist? --

"The Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil." - John 3:19

Simply put, we love our sin (darkness). We don't want to be accountable for all we've done wrong. So we invent a god would does not hold us accountable, or we claim there is no God at all. Is there a rational and logical reason to think God does not exist? None.

YOU DON'T HAVE A CHANCE
WITHOUT JESUS

headlights coming

What you believe does not determine reality nor truth. That would make you god. But you ARE NOT god. You don't control the universe. You cannot change reality. Let's try an experiment. At about midnight stand in the middle of the road just around a corner where it is hard to be seen... at night, wearing all black. When headlights start lighting up the curve, just believe that whatever is coming does not exist. Stand firm, if you don't believe a vehicle is coming, then nothing is coming. You are perfectly safe... until reality hits.

You are now standing before Jesus. You are dead. It's judgment day. You don't want to believe it's Jesus and you will be judged. But it is. That's reality.

Judgment only takes a moment, the verdict is obvious, and you know it is correct. You are guilty. You've lied, stolen and sexually lusted after others (Matthew 5:28)... you have disobeyed God. Trusting Jesus is the only answer, but it's too late. You had your last chance just before you died.

You know it's no use to protest, but still you scream out, 'I didn't know!'

But you did know. All of creation declared God's glory, His invisible attributes, and His power. You have no excuse. You willingly rejected Jesus Christ (God).

Is this you? Are you saying, 'Hell isn't so bad, I'll be with my friends.' You know that's not true. There are no friends in hell. No beer... not even water to cool your lips. There is NOTHING good in hell.

So I beg you, consider these words. Trust Jesus as having paid your penalty for every way you've have rejected God. Trust Jeus to save you from hell and bring you into the presense of God.

Trust Jesus. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. - Acts 16:31
